LUCAS- Land Use & Carbon Analysis System.

Seminars by Peter Stephens- Ministry of the Environment, New Zealand. Sept 14th 2009

The Land Use and Carbon Analysis System (LUCAS) is helping New Zealand meet its international reporting requirements under the Kyoto Protocol. It tracks and quantifies changes in New Zealand land use, particularly since 1990.

LiDAR-Light Detection And Ranging,  is a Laser scanning technique. LiDAR determines distance to an object or surface using concentrated light pulses. It is an ‘airborne mounted technology’, that is, it tends to be used from aircraft.  The range to an object is determined by measuring the time delay between transmission of a pulse and detection of the reflected signal. LiDAR is used to determine carbon stock in the above-ground biomass carbon pool.

Peter is working on a report on LUCAS and LiDAR as part of the CCSN.
